Daily Life in Safranbolu:

In Safranbolu the master of the family and the house is the eldest male. His wife has as much influence on the administration of the house as him. Men work outside for the family and women do the housework.

Men and women used to wake up together early in the morning. They used to make breakfast (usually soup) and take care of the animals. Adult males used to go to the mosque so as to pray and when they return the family has breakfast altogether.

After the breakfast, men who are dealing with manufacturing and trade go to their jobs and the rest take care of the land. In the meantime the housework is done by the women of the house and the adopted girl under the supervision of the eldest female. There usually is a lot of housework to be done since the house is big and crowded. Men used to have small take-out lunches outside such as pide, çörek (cookie) or güveç (casserole) and the people in the house do not have big lunches either.

Women used to go visiting their neigbours after they finish the housework and come back home on time in order to prepare the dinner. Men used to go to cafes in the afternoon or after dinner. People usually had early dinners and go to bed early. Some evenings they used to go visiting neigbors but they never stay long.

In the begining of the summer people used to move to summer houses. Since the summer houses are not very far away, the necessary goods were being carried from the winter houses. During the summer men used to go to work from the summer houses. They used to travel by horses or mules. In summer, fruits, meat etc. were being stored and they were carried to the winter house in the fall.

In Safranbolu all kinds of social events such as turkish bath tradition, marital activities, wedding feast, meetings at religious holidays, promotion, punishment, funeral were ceremonial and were carried out according to traditions. What should be pointed out here beside the details of those events which can be the subject of a seperate research and publication. is that the social life and folklore were very plentiful
